Everything You Need To Know About CBD in Skincare

Disclaimer: Always read packaging and ingredients and check with a board-certified dermatologist, primary care, or other medical practitioner before starting a new topical care product.

According to Byrdie, CBD has “crossed over from being a wellness supplement to a beauty buzzword”. Look up any beauty retailer and you will see a lot of brands hopping on the CBD bandwagon, with the ingredient found in products from cleansers to chapsticks, serums and balms alike.

What is CBD and how does it work?
But what exactly is CBD? CBD stands for cannabidiol, a naturally occurring chemical compound found in cannabis. Your body actually produces its own cannabinoids (called endocannabinoids), but you can boost your body’s natural supply with CBD products.

The endocannabinoid system is deeply involved in the maintenance of skin homeostasis, barrier formation and regeneration, which basically means it helps you develop healthy, balanced skin. And CBD will not get you high- that’s what tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the other primary active ingredient in cannabis, does.

What are the benefits of CBD?
A true powerhouse ingredient, CBD offers anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits to treat skin concerns like dryness, inflammation and free radical damage. It also helps regulate the production of sebum (oil) in the skin and may be effective for skin ailments like acne, eczema and psoriasis. To put it simply, CBD is all about supporting your skin and restoring it to a normal, balanced state.

Decoding the label
When it comes to CBD, you want to look out for the labelling: full spectrum CBD, broad spectrum CBD or CBD isolate. Full spectrum is the unaltered extract from the plant, including trace amounts of HTC, and broad spectrum CBD has been further processed to remove as much THC as possible while maintaining its other benefits. CBD isolate, as the name suggests, is CBD in its purest form without any other compounds.

You will also see on every label exactly how much CBD you’re getting. To work out the CBD dosage, some math is required- you start with the product weight and divide it by the number of uses, and divide that number again by the total CBD content of the product to calculate your per-use dose. However, while there is no consensus on the CBD dosage for topical application so far, topical CBD carries few risks and isn’t something you can overdose on.

Not all CBD is created equal
Not all CBD products are created equal. With the “green rush” in the industry, how can you ensure that what you are using is safe and of the highest quality? All reputable companies will use and publish independent third-party testing to verify the purity and potency of the products as well as the accuracy of the brand’s labelling.

We love Prima Skincare because of their commitment to clean and rigorous screening process. They have taken things one step further by testing 5 times through their supply chain- twice to ensure there is less than 0.3% THC, twice to make sure it’s free of pesticides, heavy metals, mycotoxins and residual solvents and one last time to ensure full potency. In other words, you can have complete peace of mind when using their products.
